In this edition we have special guest TiMMYtheFirst (yes that's how this name is spelt). A New Zealand-based Christian artist, performer, and songwriter known for his commanding stage presence and music that sits at the intersection of faith, culture, and real life.
He's performed at Festival One, participated in the NZ Music Commission's Music Careers Expo alongside Big Fan, and built a following through music that doesn't flinch from honesty. His new single "Air" is out now and it might be his most personal work yet.
In this conversation with Sela, TiMMY opens up about what it really means to become a father for the first time and why having son Isaiah didn't split his identity as an artist and a dad, but fused them. He talks about the word that changed how he approaches everything ("intentional"), what he'd tell every young musician chasing the wrong thing, and the freestyle piano session that led to one of his most talked-about moments online. And then there's "Air" - a song about pursuing something the people around you don't quite understand, and staying locked in anyway.
