In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus questions how well our inner lives and hearts align with our deeds and actions in the physical world. He is very interested in the condition of our soul. The reason becomes clear when He teaches the people how to pray. Our soul is the connection between the spiritual and physical worlds. When we align our souls with the spiritual world, we become a conduit for what God wants to do in this world. When we align our souls with what the fallen world has to offer, we corrupt our souls, cutting ourselves off from God. We then end up serving only ourselves. Everything in our physical lives should flow from our spiritual relationship with God. The Lord's prayer reminds us of this dependence in the first line: "Our Father in heaven"
